What are Blackheads?
To truly answer the question ‘how to get rid of blackheads’, we must first know what they are and how they’re formed. Blackheads are black/yellowish bumps or plugs on the skin that are formed as a result of excessive oil in our skin pores. They are medically defined as “open comodone” and are normally seen at the first stages of acne, before it develops into skin inflammation and infection. Excessive oils that are accumulated in the ducts of the sebaceous gland are the main reason for the formation of blackheads. These oils, when exposed to air, oxidize causing the oil to become solid and block our pores. The now blocked hair follicles in our clogged pores reflect light, making the clogged pores look black – hence the name blackhead.

Step-by-step Instructions on How to Get Rid of Blackheads
Getting rid of blackheads is not as hard as we initially think; after all, we’re only removing clogged oil from our pores. However, we discovered that the key to permanent blackhead removal is in knowing how to keep them from reforming. This led us to our key insight; permanent blackhead removal is a two part process – the first part is the physical removal of your blackheads, the second part is preventing blackheads from reforming. This is the key to knowing how to get rid of blackheads; the first stage is blackhead removal, the second stage is blackhead prevention.
Stage 1 | Blackhead Removal
Below is a summary of the step-by-step process on how to get rid of blackheads:
1) Wash your face twice per day, once when you wake and once before you go to bed. If you are not doing this already then you must get into the habit. Cleaning the face regularly will keep dust and alien particles at bay, which minimizes the possibility of blackheads to a great extent, while removing the blackheads already in your skin.
2) Use a cleanser* or exfoliating wash* to clean your face. Apply the cleanser to an exfoliating scrub and massage the skin where your blackheads occur in a gentle, circular motion. After rinsing, gently pat the skin with a clean towel. It is vitally important that you do not ‘hard scrub’ the skin with excessive force, desperately trying to clear your blackheads – this will only make things worse! Scrub gently, in a circular motion, and we promise you will see greater results.
3) The use of blackhead strips or a facial steamer can be a bonus, but in the grand scheme of things we found that they either had minimal effect, or just weren’t practical. Let’s be honest, how many of us have time to steam our face twice a day?! And as for blackhead strips, we found that they caused excessive inflammation of the skin and only removed the surface of the blackhead, not the whole pore, so after a week we were back to square one. If you want our advice, forget these two methods and stick to a solid routine of cleansing your face twice a day – you will see far greater results in a much shorter time period.

Stage 2 |Prevent Blackhead Formation

To truly know how to get rid of blackheads permanently we must be working in the realm of prevention, not prescription. Clogging of the pores from excess oil are the main culprits of blackhead formation, thus we must work on eliminating this excess oil formation so our pores do not clog. The best path is to adhere to a routine of regular cleansing, both of the face and body, when you wake up and before you go to bed, making sure dirt, dead cells and excess oils are cleaned away. For ladies, we recommend avoiding excessive makeup or other facial cosmetics which can prevent your skin from breathing normally. Additionally, it is also highly advisable that you use an exfoliation treatment twice a day, both at morning and night.
